BOOKS:
Recommended for first-time participants and those who like to use their imaginations
From the Edge of the Crowd, Meditations for Lent
by James E. Sargent
A series of letters by "Eli" ? the author's imagined, first-hand observer of Jesus.
At first a skeptic, Eli is transformed as he views the ministry, death and resurrection
of Jesus as they happened in the account of the Gospel of Luke. Through this collection
of letters, readers will come to new understandings, new thoughts, new perspectives
on Jesus and on faith. Suggestions for reflection conclude each day's reading.
Since letter writing shapes this book, it is suggested that readers keep a journal of
their thoughts, emotions, reflections, reactions, insights, or other responses to
either the scriptures or the devotional guidance. "Biblical Reflection(s)," which follows
each letter, places the reader in the first century. "Contemporary Reflection(s)"
prompts the reader to apply his/her imagination in a modern context.
Recommended for those seeking quiet exploration
40 Days to a Closer Walk with God: The Practice of Centering Prayer
by J. David Muyskens
Explore a simple, biblical practice of prayer that leads to a deep communion with God and
encourages a way of life motivated by the divine Presence at the center of your being.
Daily scripture and meditative readings lead to a greater understanding and fresh awareness
of Jesus' promise, "I am with you always."
Recommended for those who enjoy in-depth reflection
A Clearing Season, Reflections for Lent
by Sarah Parsons
Lent is not all about penitence or misdeeds or guilt. It is a time of introspection, true,
but its ultimate purpose lies beyond penitence. In essence Lent serves as our annual invitation
to come closer to God. It provides a time to look at our lives and ourselves, not so we may
criticize ourselves more harshly but so we can identify the obstructions that keep us from God.
