Social Justice

BACKGROUND

In July of 2016 the Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference (made up of the Baltimore-Washington Conference as well as the Eastern PA conference, West Virginia Conference, New York, Upper New York and others) Council of Bishops unanimously agreed to break the silence and created a Call to Action to eradicate racism.

Since then, the Baltimore-Washington Conference (BWC), which Calvary is part of, has issued an opportunity for congregations to make a commitment to being an Anti-Racist Church.

Following a period of discussion and a period of prayer, Calvary committed to becoming an Anti-racist Church at the March 2021 Council meeting.    Learn more about what that means here.

Why us??

As part of our Baptismal Covenant we promise to: “…accept the freedom and power God gives us to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves.”

The Book of Discipline, which reflects our Wesleyan way of serving Christ through doctrine and disciplined Christian Life, makes it clear that the “United Methodist Church shall work collaboratively with others to address concerns that threaten the cause of racial justice at all times and in all places.
What does the Bible say?  Isaiah 1:17 says “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.  Take up the cause of the fatherless;
plead the case of the widow.”
